In the realm of sustainable home building, the journey is often filled with anticipation, learning processes, designs changes, and impactful decisions. My latest personal experience in building a sustainable home has been exactly that – a rich blend of challenges, patience, and innovations. And I’m thrilled to finally share that we’ve made great strides in the process and have recently been given the green light to begin building.
Six months ago, I told you about my ambitious project. We were in the initial stages, and our main focus was striving to meet the Passive House Institute US (PHIUS) standards. These standards demand effective energy consumption, thus requiring meticulous planning for insulation, air sealing, and moisture management.
In the redesign process, our team integrated an extended roof concept. This fascinating design meets the angles of the solar rays, allowing the ingress of sunlight during winter, and provides shade in the summer. This alone has a significant impact on the house’s energy management and contributes to passive heating. Being a solar expert and advocate for renewables, optimizing the use of natural heating sources has been an intriguing part of the process.
Oh, and remember the keywords “solar panels for your home”? The house will be equipped with a solar array for home, harnessing natural sunlight to satisfy the energy needs of the house. The way solar companies are developing technology and facilitating the use of solar energy in homes is truly commendable and has made it possible for people to come a step closer to sustainability.
Another crucial aspect of our redesign involved centralizing the HVAC system. Why is this crucial for a sustainable home? It greatly enhances the circulation of air (both hot and cold), ensuring the house maintains a comfortable temperature and reduces energy consumption. All these modifications were carefully assessed by a PHIUS Certified Passive House Consultant, ensuring our house aligns with sustainable standards.
While the team spearheaded the design and assessment process, my personal endeavor was geared towards exploring water conservation opportunities. This process has been challenging, considering grey water storage and reuse aren’t fully streamlined. As a workaround, I’ve planned to install a toilet tank sink and a rain catchment system to leverage every drop of water efficiently.
Another noteworthy piece of advice I received from a fellow sustainable home builder was about the timeline for window and door delivery. Since many window manufacturing companies in the U.S do not strictly adhere to Passive House specifications, one may encounter longer than expected wait times due to potential imports. Being aware of this, we were able to plan accordingly and keep our project on schedule.
In terms of styling the interiors, I associated with Bound Collaborative, specialists in designing eco-friendly and beautiful spaces. They played a key role in helping materialize my vision while keeping the aesthetic environmental conscious.
The journey thus far has been full of valuable lessons. Progress may have seemed slow during our months of diligent planning, design changes, and certification processes. But now, having finally obtained approval from the county, I feel a newfound rush of excitement for the work done and the building that is to come.
