Hello there, fellow solar enthusiasts! I’m thrilled to share with you the progress that California has made in terms of its charging infrastructure – a fundamental building block in our transition to solar and other renewable energy sources. As of the first half of 2024, California has installed more than 150,000 public and shared private chargers, according to the California Energy Commission (CEC). Incredible, right? This number includes 137,648 Level 2 chargers and 14,708 fast chargers, which provide you with the power you need when you need it. And it’s not just public places – the state estimates that over 500,000 private home chargers have come alive, reflecting the rapid and substantial growth of solar array for home usage.
You might be wondering how many chargers were added over the last half year. The answer: 24,202 new chargers. That’s more than I can count! Incredible work by the energized Californians out there, all committed to making a tangible difference.
Governor Gavin Newsom certainly thinks so. His words? “When it comes to zero-emission vehicle infrastructure, California has no peers.” The commitment to renewable energy and, more specifically, the solar industry, is palpable.
As well as the astonishing growth in charging installations, the CEC has also approved more than $1 billion in funding for EV charging and hydrogen refueling projects. This hefty budget includes $390 million for something near and dear to my heart – electric school bus charging. Imagine every school run powered by the sun!
But that’s not all. The state is also expected to rake in over $380 million from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act – funds that will go straight into building more chargers. The future is bright and getting brighter.
Attention to detail is vital to the success of this transition. That’s why the CEC is developing state EV charging reliability regulations to keep tabs on the publicly funded chargers. In collaboration with the University of California, Davis, they’re also rallying a field testing program for charger reliability. After all, what good are a multitude of chargers if they aren’t reliable?
It’s no secret; California is shooting for the stars when it comes to solar and zero-emission solutions. With a rule set by Governor Newsom in 2020, all new car sales are required to be zero-emission by 2035. This commitment shows in the numbers: over a quarter of all new cars sold in Q2 2024 were zero-emission vehicles. That’s an average of 1,300 clean energy vehicles purchased every single day.
