The Department of Energy has granted Generac Power Systems up to $200 million to install solar arrays for homes in Puerto Rico. This grant is part of the $1 billion Puerto Rico Energy Resilience Fund. This development is monumental for the growth and recognition of solar companies.
The aim of this program is to provide residential solar installations and energy storage for disadvantaged households in Puerto Rico, particularly those situated in low-income areas prone to long-lasting power outages. Undoubtedly, this is a significant step towards achieving energy independence and resilience, particularly as we witness the increasing occurrences of extreme weather conditions.
Puerto Rico’s commitment to renewable energy is commendable. In 2017, following hurricanes that destroyed a significant portion of their electric grid, the nation passed Act 17, a policy outlining an objective to transition to 100% renewable energy by 2050. Essentially, this program utilizes stored solar energy from customers’ batteries to maintain stability in the grid and avoid blackouts, marking a significant reduction in the reliance on fossil fuel power plants.
