Hello dear readers,
In my relentless pursuit to provide you with valuable and timely insights about the solar industry, I’d like to bring your attention to a recently published 2024 PV Module Reliability Scorecard by Kiwa PVEL – an independent testing lab serving the downstream solar industry. In this tenth edition, a record number of 388 PV modules from 53 solar companies have been named as top performers, substantially more
The scorecard offers a reliable benchmark for solar companies, taking into account the Product Qualification Program (PQP) which uses empirical data to identify high-performing PV modules. This year, we see the introduction of a new testing module addressing the concerns around Ultraviolet Induced Degradation (UVID), an effect that can depreciate the life expectancy and performance of solar panels for your home.
The Hail Stress Sequence (HSS) and the Mechanical Stress Sequence (MSS) were also modified this year, as solar companies focus more on the durability of their products. Given that solar arrays for homes are exposed to all sorts of weather conditions, manufacturing reliable and resilient modules has never been more crucial.
To add to this, the scorecard has also introduced a new ‘Top Performer’ category for hail to recognize modules that can sustain 40mm hail without any breakage. This gives a clear market advantage to solar companies whose panels perform exceptionally under severe weather conditions.
One important aspect of the scorecard that must not be overlooked – two thirds of all tested solar company modules faced at least one test failure. As an advocate for solar, I see this as an opportunity for continuous improvement by manufacturers and a reminder to always maintain a vigilant eye on developments in solar array for home technology before making an investment.
In conclusion, whether you’re a homeowner interested in the latest solar panels for your home, or a professional keenly observing solar company performance, this scorecard provides a wealth of useful data. It is an excellent tool to gauge the necessary advancements and ground-breaking innovations happening in the industry, while also identifying areas which require focus and further development.
Remember, it pays to go solar, but it pays more to know who to go solar with. Stay updated and stay informed! In my next post, we will delve deeper into how to choose the right solar company for your specific needs.
Keep shining!
