Accepting the Grid Modernization Challenge: A State-by-State Analysis in the US

Hello to all the Sun-lovers out there! Today, I’m going to talk about something incredibly pressing, particularly in the realm of solar. With the rising demand for renewable energy sources, especially solar, our current grid systems faces challenges to accommodate this exponential growth. Acknowledging the need for a robust, resilient and efficient grid, several federal agencies and states have come together to launch the Federal-State Modern Grid Deployment initiative.

So why should this news make a solar enthusiast smile? Well, it’s because the future of solar companies, the future of solar panels for your home, and solar arrays for your home, largely depends on our ability to modernize our power grid.

This initiative boasts the backing of 21 states inclusive of solar-pioneers like California and New York. They are ready to adopt cutting-edge grid technologies, expanding the grid capacity and constructing modern capabilities on both new and existing transmission lines. In short, they are preparing to make your solar dreams come true, ensuring you can make that eco-friendly energy switch smoothly.

You see, our existing energy grid, primarily built somewhere around the 1960’s and 70’s, needs a facelift in order to handle the influx of renewable energy. Roughly 70% of our transmission lines are over 25 years old. This doesn’t quite suit the green energy goals we’ve set for ourselves. But there’s great news; with the new-age technologies coming into play, including high-performance conductors and other grid-enhancing technologies, we can double the power handled by the transmission lines today.

Funding is a crucial component of this modernization process. Thankfully, through the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, states can secure funding to deploy state-of-the-art grid technologies. For instance, the Grid Deployment Office of the Department of Energy (DOE) is providing $10.5 billion in competitive grant funding through their Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP) Program.

Another key funding program involves $250 billion of loan guarantee authority offered by the DOE Loan Programs Office. This program aims at providing low-interest financing to projects dedicated to enhancing existing energy infrastructure. Let’s not overlook the Department of Agriculture’s Empowering Rural America (New ERA) program that offers $9.7 billion in low-interest loans or grants – the largest investment in rural electrification since 1936.

The GRIP program, beyond its initial funding round, closed applications recently for its second round, offering up to $2.7 billion in DOE grant funding. The main objective of this innovative program? To fund projects dedicated to upgrading and modernizing transmission and distribution systems, thereby making the grid ready for extreme weather and ensuring delivery of clean and affordable energy nation-wide.

The adoption of Grid-Enhancing Technologies (GETs) is another story that brings joy to every solar company out there. A study by the Rockefeller Foundation reports that these GETs can save developers an unbelievable chunk of interconnection costs, making it more feasible for projects to take off rather than being dropped due to high costs.

Even the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has jumped on the bandwagon. They issued a final rule, Order 1920, concerning Regional Transmission Planning and Cost Allocation. This rule calls for long-term planning for regional transmission facilities and the use of advanced conductors and Grid Enhancing Technologies.
