Future Forecast: The Timeline of Hydrogen Prices and Government Involvement till 2031

First up, the US Department of Energy’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO) has charted a comprehensive blueprint to steer the progress of hydrogen technology and research in the forthcoming years. The strategy sets forward ambitious targets, including lowering ‘clean’ hydrogen production costs to $2/kg by 2026 and further to $1/kg by 2031. Such a reduction in hydrogen production costs will play a pivotal role in enhancing the overall feasibility of using hydrogen as a clean energy source.

Hydrogen technology’s importance can’t be understated, and its potential as a robust source of clean energy is significant. This has sparked a surge in international collaborations and projects aimed at tapping into this potential. One notable partnership involves Plug Power, who has committed to supplying up to 3 GW of electrolyzers to Allied Green Ammonia in Australia for their planned hydrogen-to-ammonia facility. Deliveries of the electrolyzers are expected to begin by early 2027.

Meanwhile, across the pond in the Netherlands, the government has disclosed that seven sustainable hydrogen projects are currently underway, supported by subsidies. These projects are planned to contribute collectively 101 MW of electrolysis capability, with the produced hydrogen being utilized largely by the chemical industry and refueling stations.

Last but certainly not least, H-TEC Systems and Bilfinger have entered into a partnership aimed at constructing large-scale green hydrogen projects throughout Europe. This collaboration embodies the increasing global commitment toward massive green energy projects, which includes installing solar arrays for homes and establishing large-scale clean hydrogen production facilities.
