It’s always exciting to share new advancements in the solar industry and today’s focus is on an elaborate solar project – a 12 MW solar array for home parking. As a solar expert, I monitor the landscape of solar companies and projects actively, and this one’s a real game-changer.
A top-ranked solar company has embarked on constructing a solar canopy at John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport in New York. This canopy brims with the brilliance of a 12 MW solar array which will work in unison with a 7.5 MW or 25 MWh of battery energy storage system. The goal? Squashing the over-reliance on the electric grid during peak periods.
One of the most striking features of this project is that the solar company will maintain the complete ownership of the system along with its operation and maintenance. Tying it all together will be a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) procured with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. This agreement is for securing half of the energy produced (that’s a whopping 6 MW) from this behind-the-meter segment of the project.
Ever thought about solar panels for your home and their contribution to the community? Well, in the second phase of this project, the remaining half of the electricity generated will be allocated as community solar. This ambitious plan aims to deliver energy to Con Edison courtesy of the NYS Community Distributed Generation Program. An added sweetener? This program promises to offer guaranteed electricity bill savings for a quarter of a century (a stunning 25 years!) to households located in nearby Queens communities that have been historically economically challenged and environmentally impacted.
The project is uniquely poised to have a substantial, positive impact on the environment. When the project phases are straightened out in 2025 and 2026, the canopy is estimated to generate clean energy that will slash carbon dioxide emissions by more than 6,000 tons every year. To put that in perspective, that’s the equivalent of the greenhouse gas emissions of approximately 1,500 gasoline powered passenger vehicles driven for a year.
As we steadily aim for a future powered by renewable sources, solar companies are being presented with more chances to rise up to the challenge.
