With the passing of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act, a whopping $3 trillion is expected to boost the green energy economy, with solar playing a huge role in the mix. But how does this relate to you, potential solar enthusiasts? It’s a perfect opportunity for those contemplating a solar array for their home, as these policies could introduce more advanced, efficient technology, not to mention potentially more affordable options.
So, what has led to this solar boom? Enter the Department of Energy (DOE)’s new initiative: the Manufacture of Advanced Key Energy Infrastructure Technologies Prize, or MAKE IT, for short. This $30 million fund is set to propel domestic manufacturing of green technology components, including those necessary for solar power. MAKE IT is split into two tracks, namely the Facilities Track and the Strategies Track.
The Facilities Track is intended to assist developers in transitioning from the planning stage of their manufacturing plant all the way to being construction-ready. After a three-step proposal process, the winners can be awarded up to $4.5 million each to create these manufacturing facilities.
Conversely, the Strategies Track is all about community. It encourages U.S.-based organizations to submit proposals for advancing clean energy manufacturing within their communities, leading to not just economic growth but improving the community’s overall quality of life. It’s open to nonprofits, academic institutions, economic development organizations, among others. This is where solar companies aiming to make a positive societal impact can flourish.
